Seeing the colors of leaves change before quickly disappearing is how we know the seasons are changing from fall into winter. A change is in the air, we all know, and it’s time to prepare for winter.
Some changes can come with little warning, forcing us to make sudden decisions.
It can be scary and feel unmanageable stepping into an unknown situation. When life hands you a wild card, and suddenly you’re faced with unfamiliar expectations in order to survive. While certain actions may be within your control, there’s probably a whole lot more that’s out of anyone’s control, most certainly you as an individual.
Many of us have been accused of being “Doomers”, simply because we urged the necessity of being prepared to live in a world we don’t currently recognize. To know what to do if we suddenly didn’t have a government, money, or public utilities.
Simply put, we know that experiences of struggles are important. Knowledge is vital. Change becomes less scary the more we feel prepared. Those who have survived terrifying changes take with them that knowledge, and seek out more.
Our current society is so fragile, built on an artificial foundation that could easily crumble. What our ancestors knew has largely been lost to modern industry. What was once a skill and trade, is now a footnote of the history of our evolution as a society.
I like to role play different scenarios of doom, as dark as that sounds, to see what I would do to survive. What knowledge would I need, what would need to be built/harvested/found if I was left without access to a basic need?
It may sound exhausting, but at least I feel prepared for whatever drastic changes may be heading our way.
Just a silver maple leaf that drifted in the door, and found it’s way onto our Fall decorated kitchen table.
